Fulton 246. Wheeler-Gift I, 187 (Spätere Ausgabe 1680-1693). – Enthält: I. Nova experimenta physico-mechanica de VI aeris elastica. – II. Experimentorum novorum physico-mechanicorum continvatio secunda. In qua experimenta varia tum in aere compresso, tum in fatitio-instituta, circa ignem, animalia, … – III. Defensio doctrinae de elatere et gravitate aeris. – IV. Tractatus ubi I. Mira aeris (etiam citra calorem) rare factio detecta. II. Observata nova circa durationem virtutis elasticae aeris expansi. III. Experimenta nova de condensatione aeris solo frigore facta; ejusque compressione sine machinis. IV. Ejusdem quantitatis aeris rarefacti & compressi mire discrepans extensio. – V. Tractatus, in quibus continentur suspiciones de latentibus quibusdam qualitatibus aeris… – VI. Paradoxa hydrostatica. Novis experimentis. – VII. Tentamina quaedem physiologica. New Experiments, Physico-Mechanical, touching the Spring of the Air publizierte. …
An anthology comprising seven important works by the eminent Irish natural philosopher R. Boyle (1626–1691). Anthologies containing up to 20 of Boyle’s treatises were published under the title ‘Opera varia’ by S. de Tournes in Geneva. – Contains: I. Nova experimenta physico-mechanica de VI aeris elastica. – II. A second collection of new physical and mechanical experiments. In which various experiments are described, both on compressed air and in experimental arrangements concerning fire, animals, … – III. A defence of the doctrine concerning the elasticity and gravity of air. – IV. A treatise in which I. The remarkable rarefaction of air (even in the absence of heat) is demonstrated. II. New observations concerning the duration of the elastic force of expanded air. III. New experiments on the condensation of air effected by cold alone; and on its compression without machinery. IV. The remarkably differing expansion of the same quantity of rarefied and compressed air. – V. Treatise containing conjectures regarding certain latent qualities of air… – VI. Hydrostatic paradoxes. Based on new experiments. – VII. Certain physiological experiments. (with the subheadings: ‘One and another specimen demonstrating how much chemical experiments…’ and ‘On absolute rest in bodies’). – Boyle, a founding member of the Royal Society in 1660 and elected its President in 1680, “improved the air pump in collaboration with Robert Hooke, and following its completion in 1659, he began a series of experiments on the properties of air. In 1660, Boyle carried out his important experiments to determine atmospheric pressure, which he published in *New Experiments, Physico-Mechanical, touching the Spring of the Air*. … In his experiments, Boyle also demonstrated that sound cannot propagate in a vacuum. … Boyle is regarded as the founder of analytical chemistry; the term ‘analysis’ (resolution) was coined by him.” (Wikipedia). – Without the often-missing engraved portrait and 1 copperplate illustration for *Paradoxa hydrostatica*; a very good, clean copy.
