Seuss, London Scene

Seuss, London Scene

Seuss, Juergen, Gerold Dommermuth und Hans Maier. London Scene. Frankfurt a. M., Büchergilde Gutenberg (1969). Gr.-8°. 42 S. und 92 teils farbige Tafeln. Orig.-Leinenband mit illustr. Schutzumschlag.

First edition of what is arguably the finest photographic documentary of the Swinging Sixties in London. – Includes 1 original photograph by J. Seuss, ‘British Oak Dart Club’ (silver gelatine, 19.5 x 26.5 cm, stamped by the photographer on the reverse). – *London Scene* “is not a picture book in the usual sense. The photographic material is captivating; it draws the reader right into the scene; it shows what is really happening. Manifestos, posters, pamphlets, the *International Times* and other underground publications are quoted and featured in the text” (back cover blurb). – The book designer, typographer, publisher and photographer J. Seuss (1935–2023) “shaped the book design of the Büchergilde Gutenberg for decades and was honoured with numerous (over 100 national and international) awards and prizes. He also designed books for other publishers, such as C.H. Beck, Faber & Faber and Aufbau. … Juergen Seuss ran his own small publishing house, BrennGlas Verlag: there he published, amongst other works, *Das Tagebuch eines Laien* (by Wieland Herzfelde) and *Vom Ornament zur Linie, ein Buch über den frühen Insel-Verlag*. He has written poetry and essays on book aesthetics, and he has taken photographs (‘London Scene’, 1969; ‘Beat in Liverpool’, 1965). He has been in contact with, and has corresponded with, Hans Joachim Schädlich, Peter Rühmkorf (some of whose letters are published by Kalliope), Peter Härtling, Jochen Gelberg and Werner Mittenzwei, amongst others. From 1985 to 2000, Juergen Seuss was Professor of Book Art at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, where he met his future wife, Nanna. … “His enthusiasm for books and his creative flair, with which he designed the entire book from the inside out, set him apart, as did his commitment to producing affordable, high-quality literature – and this certainly included his work as a producer in the selection of materials,” says Nanna Seuss in tribute to her late husband” (Börsenblatt, 24 April 2023). – Dust jacket on the back cover with slight edge wear; a very good copy.
