Gessner, Mort d’Abel

Gessner, Mort d'Abel

Gessner, Salomon. Mort d’Abel.

A rare luxury edition on ‘grand papier vélin’ with six coloured dot-engravings ‘avant la lettre’ based on watercolours by N. A. Monsiau (1754–1837). – From 1791 onwards, the Parisian publisher Defer de Maisonneuve published a series of exquisite illustrated books; however, the colour engravings were not produced using multi-plate printing, but were created from a single plate using the pointillist technique, following the English model. ‘The best known among them are Florian’s *Galatée* and Gessner’s *Mort d’Abel*, both of which were magnificently printed in 1793 with colour engravings after Monsiau by Cazenave, Colibert and others’ (Lexikon des Buchwesens I, 237). – ″ The colour engraving—introduced from England and having attained the highest technical and artistic perfection in France—experienced only a brief resurgence in the field of book illustration during the 1790s, appearing in a small number of limited-edition luxury publications by the publisher Defer de Maisonneuve, which found no successors in their time” (Furstenberg catalogue, p. 88). – Slightly stained in places within the white margins; a good copy with wide margins, untrimmed at the sides and bottom, and in clean condition.
