Fotogravüren in Kupfertiefdruck. Orig.-Halblederband mit goldgepr. Rückentitel.

Bertolotti 51. Heidtmann 11127. Heiting/Jaeger II, 150 ff. Sichel, Krull 14 ff. – Erste Ausgabe. – „Germaine Krull established herself as an avant-garde artist in Paris in the 1920s. She had begun to study photography in 1918 in Munich, stimulated by the cultural and political atmosphere in the Bavarian capital, where students, political activists, and artists such as Thomas and Heinrich Mann, Vassily Kandinsky, Richard Strauss, and Rainer Maria Rilke met to dicuss their ideas and projects. Krull later specialized in portrait and nude photography. … The prints were of remarkably high quality, and where pasted onto the leaves by the photographers themselves, who could not afford to pay someone else to do the job. All the nudes are female, and the classicism of the poses, the smoothness of the shadows, the choise of settings, and the printing technique are reminicent of the style of the pictorialist Frank Eugene, who had been the teacher of the photographers represented, and who had just published Hawe, a portefolio of twelve male nudes“ (A. Bertolotti). – „Germaine Krull still seems to be searching for her own photographic language, wavering, as she does, between the photographic styles of her more mature colleagues. Krull used more natural daylight settings, which does give her images a less formal mood. The works included in this book are like photographed versions of classical academic studies. Many are reminiscent of the works of painters, such as the German artist Georg Papperitz. This publication is widely known as Germaine Krull’s first book publication, and therefore an important and appreciated volume amongst photobook lovers. Though the youngest photographer featured here, Krull went on to become the best-known of them all“ (Andreas H. Bitesnich in achtung.photography). – Titel und wenige Tafeln leicht braunfleckig, sehr gutes Exemplar.
First edition. – No. 4 of 50 copies of the deluxe edition on Japanese paper in a half-leather binding. – First publication by G. Krull, then aged just 21, who had opened her own photographic studio in 1917 following her studies in Munich. – The nude photographs, hand-printed using a copper plate press by J(osef) Pésci (4), W(anda) v. Debschitz-Kunowski (9) and Germaine Krull (7). – “This volume, published in a limited edition, contains 20 ‘photographic images of female bodies from life’ as hand-pressed copperplate prints. A second edition appeared in 1920” (E. Kaufhold in Heiting/Jaeger). – The title page and a few plates have slight brown spots; a very good copy.

1 Gessner, Salomon. Mort d’Abel.

A rare luxury edition on ‘grand papier vélin’ with six coloured dot-engravings ‘avant la lettre’ based on watercolours by N. A. Monsiau (1754–1837). – From 1791 onwards, the Parisian publisher Defer de Maisonneuve published a series of exquisite illustrated books; however, the colour engravings were not produced using multi-plate printing, but were created from a single plate using the pointillist technique, following the English model. ‘The best known among them are Florian’s *Galatée* and Gessner’s *Mort d’Abel*, both of which were magnificently printed in 1793 with colour engravings after Monsiau by Cazenave, Colibert and others’ (Lexikon des Buchwesens I, 237). – ″ The colour engraving—introduced from England and having attained the highest technical and artistic perfection in France—experienced only a brief resurgence in the field of book illustration during the 1790s, appearing in a small number of limited-edition luxury publications by the publisher Defer de Maisonneuve, which found no successors in their time” (Furstenberg catalogue, p. 88). – Slightly stained in places within the white margins; a good copy with wide margins, untrimmed at the sides and bottom, and in clean condition.

1 Milton, John.

A very rare monumental edition on large vellum paper, with the plates printed on Chinese paper. – “A monumental Romantic publication, sought after for its illustrations, which comprise 25 superb inset plates engraved on steel by the finest engravers of the period, based on compositions in a classical and dramatic style by J.-J. Flatters. The volume also contains portraits of Milton, Chateaubriand and Lamartine” (L. Carteret). – “A few rare copies were printed on large-format vellum paper with the illustrations on applied Chinese paper” (G. Vicaire). – The illustrations are based on a cycle of 56 drawings produced by Jean-Jacques Flatters (1786–1845) in 1836, which were intended to be published as early as 1837 in a monumental edition. As the project failed financially, only the first two volumes were printed at the time, and only 12 of his illustrations were reproduced. It was not until ten years after Flatters’ death that the publisher Amable Rigaud acquired the rights and completed the work. From the 56 drawings, the 25 most striking and dramatic motifs were selected, then transferred onto steel plates by France’s finest copper engravers. – Shows brown stains across the entire page, mainly along the page edges; otherwise, very well preserved.

1 Cals, Rose (en fait Jeanne Ramel-Cals). Rose. Roman.

Andreas Fischer. La maison manquante. – The missing house. Paris, La Hune (1992).

– Christian Boltanski (1944-2021) „was a conceptual artist. He had become known for his installations of memory inventories, which often take almost monumental proportionss. In 1972, 1977, and 1987 he participated at documenta 5,6 and 8. In 2011 he represented France at the Venice Biennale. He lived with his wife Annette Messager in Malakoff near Paris“ (kunstaspekte(dot)de). – Tadellos.
