Robert Indiana (1928-2018), ein Hauptvertreter der Pop Art und der Signalkunst, wurde durch seine plakativen Zeichenbilder bekannt und hatte seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Stable Gallery in New York 1966. Im selben Jahr entstand auch sein bekanntestes Werk LOVE mit seinen Buchstaben L und O, darunter V und E – in den Farben Rot, Blau und Grün. Das Motiv wurde 1964 vom „Museum of Modern Art“ in New York als Weihnachtskarte bei Indiana in Auftrag gegeben. – „Für mich stellt das ‚LOVE‘-Gemälde ein Ein-Wort-Gedicht dar. Das ‚O‘ ist Teil einer typographischen Tradition – bei im Handsatz hergestellten Skripten ist das ‚O‘ gekippt. Das war ganz und gar nicht meine Erfindung. Ich habe einfach eine Tradition fortgeführt.“ (R. Indiana zit. nach Katalog zur Ausstellung im Museum Kurhaus und Koekkoek Haus Kleve 2007, S. 106 f.). – Mit leichtem Fingerabdruck im Buchstaben „L“, sehr gutes Exemplar. – Robert Indiana (1928-2018), a major representative of Pop Art and signal art, became known for his striking drawings and had his first solo exhibition at the Stable Gallery in New York in 1966. In the same year, he also created his best-known work LOVE with his letters L and O, including V and E – in red, blue and green. The motif was commissioned from Indiana by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1964 as a Christmas card. – “For me, the ‚LOVE‘ painting represents a one-word poem. The ‚O‘ is part of a typographical tradition – in hand-set scripts, the ‚O‘ is tilted. That wasn’t my invention at all. I was simply continuing a tradition.” (R.
