Graesse I, 306. – Erste illustrierte Ausgabe. – Sehr seltene Vorzugsausgabe auf besserem Papier des alphabetisch aufgebauten Lexikons europäischer Kupferstecher. – Mit den beiden häufig fehlenden Radierungen von Picart nach Rossignol und der Radierung von Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn „Une Faiseuse de Baignets“ (Die Pfannkuchenbäckerin; Bartsch 124), die von Basan nur geringfügig überarbeitet wurde. Diese Radierung, wie auch die übrigen, mit gestochenen Angaben zu Band und Seitenzahl. – Bei den jeweiligen biographischen Angaben des künstler-alphabetisch geordneten Lexikons wurden weiterhin Radierungen von Eisen, Cochin, van Dyck, Choffard, Hollar, Mariette, Piccart u. a. nach Amand, Bega, Callot, Choffard, Corneille, Moreau, Ostade, Rousseau, Waterloo u. v. a. eingebunden. – Die beiden Radierungen von Pierre van Laer sowie eine Radierung von Watelet sind im Kupferstichverzeichnis nicht aufgeführt. – Rückendeckel von Band I im oberen mit kleiner restaurierter Beschädigung, stellenweise etwas braunfleckig, die Tafeln meist nur im weißen Rand, außergewöhnlich schönes Exemplar in einem prachtvollen Handeinband des bedeutenden englischen Buchbinders Francis Bedford (1799-1883). „Born at Paddington, London, the son of a courier attached to the court of George III, Francis Bedford (1799-1883) went off to a school in Yorkshire, during which time his father died. Upon the young man’s return to London in 1817, his guardian, one Henry Bower of No. 38 Great Marlborough Street, apprenticed him to a bookbinder by the name of Haigh, in Poland Street, Oxford Street; following a short term there, he moved on to another binder named Findlay, also situated in Poland Street. At the end of his apprenticeship, Bedford entered the bookbinding trade as an assistant to one of the best bookbinders of his day, Charles Lewis (1786-1836), at No. 35 Duke Street, St. James, London and he eventually succeeded Lewis as head of the firm. From 1841 until dissolution in 1850, he functionned in partnership with John Clarke, who excelled in binding books in tree-marbled calf, at No. 61 Frith Street, Soho. Because of ill health, Bedford left England for the Cape of Good Hope, and after returning to England he resumed his trade at Blue Anchor Yard, York Street, Westminster, and also conducted business at 91 York Street. He died at his residence in Shepherd’s Bush, Hammersmith, London, on 8 june 1883. Bedford profited significantly from the patronage of the Duke of Portland. The firm of Sotheby, Wilkinson, and Hodge disposed of Bedford’s books in March 1884, the sale realizing a total of £ 4.876 16s. 6d.“ (S. J. Rogal, The Rushton M. Dorman, Esq. library sale catalogue (1886) I, 47). – First illustrated edition. – Very rare special edition on better paper of the alphabetically arranged encyclopedia of European engravers. – With the two frequently missing etchings by Picart after Rossignol and the etching by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn „Une Faiseuse de Baignets“ (The Pancake Baker; Bartsch 124), which was only slightly reworked by Basan. This etching, like the others, with engraved details of volume and page number. – Furthermore, etchings by Eisen, Cochin, van Dyck, Choffard, Hollar, Mariette, Piccart and others after Amand, Bega, Callot, Choffard, Corneille, Moreau, Ostade, Rousseau, Waterloo and many others were included in the respective biographical information of the artist-alphabetically arranged lexicon. – The two etchings by Pierre van Laer and one etching by Watelet are not listed in the list of engravings. – Some brownstaining in places, the plates mostly in white margins only, an exceptionally fine copy in a splendid hand binding by the important English bookbinder Francis Bedford (1799-1883).
