Camus, La peste

Camus, La peste

Camus, Albert. La peste. Paris, Gallimard (2. Januar 1951). 8°. 332 S., [1] Bl. mit Titel in Rot und Schwarz. Orig.-Pappeinband mit goldgepr. Rückentitel und Rücken- und Deckel-Illustration in Gold und Schwarz (Entwurf: Mario Prassinos) mit Cellophan-Schutzumschlag.

Huret 105 a. KNLL III, 572.
Second printing of the first edition of A. Camus’s best-known novel. – No. 2414 of 3,130 copies printed on Vélin Labeur paper. The first printing was published in May 1947 in a run of 2,080 numbered copies. – “In his work *The Plague*, Albert Camus achieves a remarkable and invaluable masterpiece – a feat which, in my view, is something every reader should aspire to: Camus combines clarity of vision, straightforwardness and a sense of reality with optimism, love for humanity and committed solidarity in the face of catastrophic abysses. In this novel, he draws on observations and reflections from his personal experience in occupied France during the Nazi era. Any suspicion or concern that reading this novel would amount to a pessimistic and oppressive examination of the all-too-human response to a catastrophe is not borne out: Camus offers us an illustration and reflection on the possibilities of humanity, without resorting to moralising, without ever coming across as intrusive, but instead in a clear and uncompromisingly humanitarian manner” (Svantje Guinebert, University of Bremen). – A very good copy with its cellophane dust jacket.
