Parr/Lundgren, The Chinese Photobook 60. – „Ellen Thorbecke (née Kolban, and also known as Ellen Catleen) was already established as a freelance journalist in Berlin before she moved to China in 1930 with her new husband, Willem Thorbecke, the Dutch ambassador to China. All four of the titles collected here feature a lively, whimsical collaboration between Ellen Thorbecke as photographer and Friedrich H. Schiff, an Austrian caricaturist who arrived in Shanghai about 1928. The weave of photography and illustration is played out in Schiff’s drawings, accompanying or often, in later titles, superimposed upon or continuing the line of Thorbecke’s photos. The handwritten titles, dramatic collaging, and highly graphic arrangement and use of photographs highlight the collaborative and inventive approach to the layout of each book. Each book also includes texts, both informative and fanciful; taken together, these titles offer unique insight into an expatriate’s perspective on life in China’s major cities during the 1930s. In Peking Studies, Thorbecke’s photographs and Schiff’s sketches combine to create a charming and memorable, albeit selective, visual record of interwar Beijing. The book is an account, totally imagined, of a tour-a tour de force, in fact-of the city by the stout Chinese Mr. Wu and the lanky European Mr. Pim, both inventions of the authors. Wu and Pim appear on the cover and throughout the book in drawings: Wu with a folding fan, Pim in a white suit and hat, with a camera. The book is a montage of photos, drawings, collages, text, labels, and black, white, and red colorings; the text includes a bit of social history as well. A fullpage colered map of Beijing (Peking) shows a yellowheaded Wu pointing out to a red-faced Pim some of the famous sights of the city“ (Martin Parr). – Deckel leicht angestaubt, sehr gutes sauberes Exemplar. – Illustrated original cloth binding with an illustration on the cover and the title on a red silk ribbon. – The cover is slightly dusty, but it is a very good, clean copy. Geschenkgabe für den Seemann Gustav Sobbe, wohl der Organisator eines Kostümfests an Bord eines mit den Initialen „V. L.“ benannten Schiffes, das im März 1904 im Hafen von Singapur lag. Die Besatzung veranstalte an Bord ein Kostümfest, zu dem auch Vertreter des Inselstaates eingeladen waren, die in ihren traditionellen Trachten vor asiatisch anmutenden Paravanen posieren. Daneben finden sich auch Gruppenaufnahmen der Besatzung (darunter Matrosen der „S. M. S. Olga“) sowie vermutlich von honorigen Handelsvertretern, die offenbar ebenfalls eingeladen waren. Wahrscheinlich hatte das Fest in Teilen auch den Charakter eines Varietéabends (ein Portraitierter trägt ein Schild um den Hals mit der Aufschrift „Bauchredner“, ein anderer mit Zylinder im Gestus eines Zauberers wird flankiert von zwei Statisten in skurrilen Krokodilskostümen). – Einband etwas berieben, die Fotos mit geringen Altersspuren. She was Mao’s official portrait photographer from 1950 until 1962, when she aroused the ire of the Chairman’s fearsome wife, Jiang Jing, and was sent to a labour camp on the orders of this future member of the Gang of Four. … Looking at some of the superb, iconic images in this fascinating book, which was published in many languages, it seems incredible that the official reason for Bo’s fall from grace was the allegation that she had never taken a good photograph of the Chairman. The real reason, it appears, was quite the opposite. Madame Jing wanted to monopolize Hou Bo’s photographic talents for her own aggrandizement, and when the photographer refused, she spent three hard years in a labour camp, emerging almost blind, and then spent a further seven years before her rehabilitation working as a cleaner for the New China Press Agency“ (Martin Parr in Parr/Badger). – „The adult life of Mao Zedong (Tsetung) is chronicled here in full-page, full-color portraits. Clearly posed for the traits. Clearly posed for the camera on the whole, the photographs show Mao as charismatic leader, teacher, thinker, general, and father figure. The backgrounds are highly stylized, pointing to some manipulation of the images, The purpose of this album, published two years after Mao’s death is to glorify Mao. The book reveals nothing about him that was not already known, but it reveals quite a lot about publishing and personality cults. Aside from a brief, unsigned preface, simple captions, and an index, the album has no text-the photos were, after all, self-explanatory, oft-published images. … As Mao aged and became more rotund, and as his hair receded, his facial skin retained its youthful color and glow, an attribute due less to nature than to artistic skill. The public’s mourning for Mao made books such as this one enormously popular, and ownership of a copy would have demonstrated a person’s loyalty to all that Mao represented in his quest to build a new China.
