Gernsheim, Incunabula 228. – Erschienen zum 300. Geburtstag des Dramatikers; ausgestattet mit Fotografien des bedeutenden britischen Foto-Pioniers E. Edwards (1837-1903). – Edwards entwickelte und patentierte 1869 eine Variante des Lichtdrucks, die er Heliotypie nannte, und kommerzialisierte diese erfolgreich. Im Jahr 1872 brachte er das Verfahren in die USA, nachdem der Bostoner Verleger James Osgood die Rechte erworben hatte. Außerdem portraitierte er Charles Darwin (1868) für die Reihe „Portraits of Men of Eminence in Literature, Science and Art“ und bedeutende Mediziner aus der ganzen Welt (1867). Mit seinen Aufnahmen zu G. Hereford-Brookes „The Oberland and its Glaciers“ (London 1866) gilt Edwards auch als Pionier der Gebirgsfotografie. – Innengelenke stellenweise etwas angeplatzt, sehr gutes Exemplar.
Published to mark the 300th anniversary of the playwright’s birth; illustrated with photographs by the eminent British photographic pioneer E. Edwards (1837–1903). – In 1869, Edwards developed and patented a variant of phototype printing, which he called heliotype, and successfully commercialised it. In 1872, he introduced the process to the USA after the Boston publisher James Osgood had acquired the rights. He also took a portrait of Charles Darwin (1868) for the series ‘Portraits of Men of Eminence in Literature, Science and Art’ and photographed eminent medical practitioners from around the world (1867). With his photographs for G. Hereford-Brookes’ *The Oberland and its Glaciers* (London 1866), Edwards is also regarded as a pioneer of mountain photography. – Inner joints slightly split in places; a very good copy.
