Gochmann in Deutsch und Englisch. – „Fred Herzog (*1930 in Bad Friedrichshall) widmete sich nach seiner Emigration nach Kanada in den 1950er-Jahren einem damals eher unüblichen Medium: der Farbfotografie. Er durchbrach damit die etablierten Sehgewohnheiten und Lehrmeinungen, die vorrangig der Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie den Kunststatus zusprachen. Als Pionier der Farbfotografie perfektioniert er den Blick für das vermeintlich Nebensächliche. Seine Motive sind die Straßen von Vancouver, Supermärkte, Tankstellen, Bars, Stadtszenen, Landschaften und immer wieder die Menschen seiner Umgebung – die Höhen und Tiefen des nordamerikanischen Traums. Er lotet das Potenzial der Farbfotografie als Medium großer Objektivität wie auch großer Kunstfertigkeit aus und zeigt mit kritischem Blick Banales, Ephemeres und scheinbar Bedeutungsloses. Vor allem aber verleiht die Farbe seinen Fotografien eine einzigartige Stimmung und Kraft und lässt sie erst authentisch erscheinen“ (Hatje Cantz). – Sehr gutes Exemplar.

In doing so, he broke with established viewing habits and doctrines, which primarily attributed artistic status to black-and-white photography. As a pioneer of colour photography, he perfected his eye for the supposedly incidental. His motifs are the streets of Vancouver, supermarkets, petrol stations, bars, city scenes, landscapes and, time and again, the people around him – the highs and lows of the North American dream. He explores the potential of colour photography as a medium of great objectivity and great artistry, and with a critical eye shows the banal, the ephemeral and the seemingly meaningless.
