Ferguson, Bibliography of the History of Technology 47 f. Mottelay/Fleury, Bibliographical History of Electricity 47. Poggendorff III, 364.
A very rare first edition of this important reference work on the historical technical fallacy of the perpetual motion machine. – The British engineer and inventor H. Dircks (1806–1873) approaches the subject with the scepticism of a trained engineer. The book meticulously compiles historical accounts, letters, scientific essays and, in particular, numerous patent specifications from those eras. It documents not only the inventive spirit but also the physical fallacies of theorists and craftsmen who attempted to construct machines capable of performing work continuously without an external energy supply. One prominent chapter, for example, is devoted to the designs of the Marquis of Worcester. In German works on the history of technology, the book is classified as the first chronicle on the subject. Arthur W. J. G. Ord-Hume, for instance, refers directly to Dircks as the forefather of systematic documentation in his modern bibliographies on the perpetual motion machine. Early German treatises – such as Anton Daul’s *Das Perpetuum mobile* (Vienna, 1900), which is used by historians of technology – are also based bibliographically directly on Henry Dircks’s pioneering work. – Dircks gained international renown through his 1858 invention, ‘Pepper’s Ghost’. By means of a glass plate positioned at a 45-degree angle on the stage and skilful lighting, a hidden person could be made visible to the audience as a transparent, three-dimensional ‘ghost’. – A very fine, clean copy.
