Haase in Prague under the title ‘Dissertatio inauguralis anatomica sistens Anatomiam monstri bicorporei (thoraco-gastro-didymi-singularis)’. – Die erste Veröffentlichung des böhmisch-russischen Anatomen W. Gruber (1814-1890). Gruber liefert eine präzise anatomische Beschreibung und Untersuchung einer seltenen, zweikörperigen Fehlbildung (Siamesische Zwillinge), medizinisch als Thoraco-Gastro-Didymus klassifiziert. – „Wenzel Gruber gelang es, gegen enorme Widerstände, den wissenschaftlich betriebenen Anatomie-Unterricht in Russland aufzubauen. Er verstand es, das ihm zur Verfügung stehende große Material menschlicher Leichen – insbesondere eine riesige Schädelsammlung – gezielt für seine Forschungen zu nützen und wichtige Details, Variationen und pathologische Abweichungen zu finden und exakt darzustellen. Gruber, der vielfach ausgezeichnet und geehrt wurde, galt zu seiner Zeit als bester Kenner dieses Sondergebiets. Nach Gruber (und dem schwedischen Anatom Roland Martin) ist die Martin-Gruber-Anastomose, eine Verbindung zwischen Nervus medianus und Nervus ulnaris, mitbenannt, die er in einer Fallserie beschrieb. 1859 beschrieb er als erster den später nach Primo Dorello benannten Dorello-Kanal“ (Wikipedia). – Tafel II vor Tafel I eingebunden, das erste und letzte Blatt etwas fleckig, sehr gutes Exemplar.
A very rare printing of the first edition with a Latin title page; the second printing appeared under the title ‘Anatomy of a Monstrum Bicorporeum of a peculiar nature (Thoraco-Gastro-Didymus)’. – The first publication by the Bohemian-Russian anatomist W. Gruber (1814–1890). Gruber provides a precise anatomical description and examination of a rare, two-bodied malformation (Siamese twins), medically classified as Thoraco-Gastro-Didymus. – “Wenzel Gruber succeeded, against enormous opposition, in establishing a scientifically based programme of anatomy teaching in Russia. He knew how to make targeted use of the extensive collection of human cadavers at his disposal – in particular a vast collection of skulls – for his research, identifying and accurately depicting important details, variations and pathological abnormalities. Gruber, who received numerous awards and honours, was regarded in his day as the foremost expert in this specialised field. The Martin-Gruber anastomosis – a connection between the median nerve and the ulnar nerve, which he described in a series of case studies – is named after Gruber (and the Swedish anatomist Roland Martin). In 1859, he was the first to describe the ‘Dorello canal’, later named after Primo Dorello (Wikipedia). – Plate II bound before Plate I; the first and last leaves are slightly stained; a very good copy.

Wellcome II, 181. – Zweite Ausgabe, zugleich die erste illustrierte mit der berühmten Farbtafel Gautier d’Agotys. – „The first edition of this popular and frequently reissued book was published in 1745. This second edition contains a coloured plate by Gautier d’Agoty depicting a dissection of the bladder, testicle, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and penis with the full length of the urethra exposed“ (Heirs of Hippocrates 858). – Das Werk beschreibt neue, von Jacques Daran entwickelte Behandlungsformen bei Harnröhrenstricturen, die er in der französischen Provinz und ab 1754 in Paris mit größtem Erfolg ausübte. – Der franz. Anatom und Maler J. F. Gautier d’Agoty (1716-1785), Schüler des Kupferstechers und Malers J. C. Le Blon, entwickelte um 1740 in Konkurrenz mit seinem Lehrer ein Farbdruckverfahren der Mezzotinto-Radierung. Er veröffentlichte die erste Zeitschrift mit farbig gedruckten Illustrationen. Zusammen mit dem Arzt Guichard Joseph Duverny veröffentlichte er einige anatomische Tafelwerke (vgl. Choulant 108 ff.). – Rücken teils stärker berieben, Ecken etwas bestoßen, durchgehend leicht gebräunt, gutes Exemplar.
Second edition, and the first to be illustrated with Gautier d’Agoty’s famous colour plate. – “The first edition of this popular and frequently reissued book was published in 1745. This second edition contains a coloured plate by Gautier d’Agoty depicting a dissection of the bladder, testicle, seminal vesicles, prostate gland and penis, with the full length of the urethra exposed” (Heirs of Hippocrates 858). – The work describes new forms of treatment for urethral strictures developed by Jacques Daran, which he practised with great success in the French provinces and, from 1754, in Paris. – The French anatomist and painter J. F. Gautier d’Agoty (1716–1785), a pupil of the engraver and painter J. C. Le Blon, developed a colour printing process using mezzotint etching around 1740, in competition with his teacher. He published the first journal featuring colour-printed illustrations. Together with the physician Guichard Joseph Duverny, he published several anatomical atlases (cf. Choulant 108 ff.). – Spine partly heavily rubbed, corners slightly bumped, slightly browned throughout; a good copy.
