La première édition américaine est parue en 1936 sous le titre « Recollections of a Picture Dealer » chez Little, Brown and Company à Boston. Vollard étant décédé en 1939 dans un accident de voiture, la version de 1937 publiée chez Albin Michel constitue la dernière parue de son vivant et autorisée par lui-même. Elle constitue encore aujourd’hui la base textuelle de toutes les rééditions et traductions modernes.
