Während wir aus anderen Teilen Südamerikas bereits umfangreiche Sammlungen von Völkertypen besitzen, fehlten sie aus dem von mir bereisten Gebiet bisher völlig. Die indianische Bevölkerung dieser Gegenden, der Flußgebiete des oberen Rio Negro und Yapurá, ist verhältnismäßig stark und hat in ihren teilweise durch große Schwierigkeiten der Schifffahrt von europaischem Verkehr und Einfluß sehr abgeschlossenen Wohnsitzen, sich selbst überlassen, ihre Ursprünglichkeit und Rassereinheit besser bewahren können, als die Stämme anderer Gegenden des Kontinents, die einer starken weißen Besiedelung oder den vernichtenden Scharen der Kautschuksammler ausgesetzt waren“ (Aus der Einleitung). – T. Theodor Christian Koch, 1872-1924) „nahm von 1898-1900 jedoch an der zweiten Expedition des Leipzigers Hermann Meyer durch Zentralbrasilien teil, und arbeitete ab 1901 zunächst als Volontär, ab April 1902 dann als wissenschaftlicher Hilfsarbeiter am Berliner Museum für Völkerkunde. Zwischen 1903 und 1905 unternahm er eine umfangreiche Expedition in das nordwestliche Amazonasgebiet, deren wissenschaftlicher Ertrag in Form von Beschreibungen der dort lebenden Indianervölker, umfangreichen Sprachaufnahmen, Fotos sowie einer eindrucksvollen ethnographischen Sammlung seinen zukünftigen Ruhm begründen sollte“ (M. Lieferung mit den Tafeln 123-141 und die Karte, die Mappen etwas angestaubt und mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren, sonst sehr gut erhalten.

Whilst we already possess extensive collections of ethnic groups from other parts of South America, such collections from the region I travelled through have been completely absent until now. The indigenous population of these regions—the river basins of the upper Rio Negro and Yapurá—is relatively numerous and, in their settlements, which are largely cut off from European contact and influence due to the great difficulties of navigation, has been left to its own devices, they have been able to preserve their original character and racial purity better than the tribes of other parts of the continent, which were exposed to heavy white settlement or the devastating hordes of rubber collectors” (From the Introduction). – T. Howes R 85. – Première édition rare, publiée à l’insu de Raynal. – „Le nom de Guillaume-Thomas Raynal reste attaché à son œuvre majeure, l’Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes. Cette compilation à visée encyclopédique, l’un des grands succès de librairie de la fin du 18e siècle, suscita autant de critiques que d’éloges de la part de ses contemporains. Elle apparaît comme pleinement représentative d’un paysage éditorial marqué par l’évolution du simple récit de voyage vers la réflexion philosophique sur le rôle de l’Europe dans le monde, particulièrement sur le continent américain. Le tricentenaire de la naissance de l’abbé Raynal (1713-1796) est l’occasion de mettre en valeur la singularité du regard porté par un homme des Lumières sur l’Amérique, regard plongé dans l’actualité du moment – la guerre d’Indépendance dont il se fait le chroniqueur – et annonciateur des profondes transformations politiques et sociales qu’engagera la Révolution française, notamment l’abolition de l’esclavage. Ce regard est aussi le reflet des lectures multiples dont s’est nourri un auteur qui n’a lui-même jamais traversé l’Atlantique“ (Raynal un regard vers l’Amérique, Exposition dans la Bibliothèque Mazarine, Paris 2013). – Quelques taches brunes et brunissement plus prononcé à certains endroits, sinon exemplaire bien conservé, non rogné sur les côtés et en haut.
Rare first edition, published without Raynal’s knowledge. – „The name Guillaume-Thomas Raynal remains linked to his major work, the Philosophical and Political History of the Settlements and Trade of the Europeans in the Two Indies. This encyclopedic compilation, one of the great publishing successes of the late 18th century, drew as much criticism as praise from his contemporaries. It appears to be fully representative of a publishing landscape marked by the evolution from simple travel narratives to philosophical reflection on the role of Europe in the world, particularly on the American continent. The tercentenary of the birth of Abbé Raynal (1713-1796) is an opportunity to highlight the unique perspective of a man of the Enlightenment on America, a view steeped in the events of the day—the War of Independence, which he chronicled—and a harbinger of the profound political and social transformations that the French Revolution would bring about, notably the abolition of slavery. This perspective also reflects the wide-ranging reading that nourished an author who himself never crossed the Atlantic“ (Raynal un regard vers l’Amérique, Exhibition at the Bibliothèque Mazarine, Paris 2013). – A few brown spots and more pronounced browning in some places, otherwise well preserved, untrimmed copy.

Its accompanying texts, gathered by Alain Bosquet, placed it more in a social-documentary context – with a politically antagonistic, even anti-American point of view. … What has made this arguably the most renowned photobook of all? Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, the majority of the pictures are instantly memorable, ‚dry, lean, and transparent,‘ as John Szarkowski has said of them, yet also weighty and profound, even heartstopping. The sad-eyed lady of the lift, the lean sidewalk cowboy, the shrouded Miami car, the cynical Hoboken city fathers – images like these, and many others, could almost carry the book’s heartfelt message individually, even if not part of such an adroitly sequenced totality.
