1 Rheims, Bettina. Female trouble. (Mit einem Vorwort von Catherine Deneuve). München, Schirmer-Mosel (1989). 4°. 151, (1) S. mit teils farb. Tafeln. OLn. mit illustr. OU.

Koetzle, Fotografen A-Z 324. – Erste deutsche Ausgabe. – „Bettina Rheims has been one of the most acclaimed woman photographers of France since the early 80s, when she first showed her sensational female nudes and portraits. Film stars, actresses and artists, models, friends, country fair acrobats and strippers- known and unknown women have posed in front of her lens during the past twenty years“ (Schirmer-Mosel). – Sehr gutes Exemplar.

1 Sannes – Claus, Hugo. Oog om oog. Foto’s van Sanne Sannes, Tekst van Hugo Claus (nar gedichten van Macedonios, Asklepiades…). Amsterdam, De Bezige Bij (1964). Folio (36,5 x 22 cm.). [47] Bl. mit 54 Duotone-Tafeln. Illustr. Orig.-Kunstlederband.

Auer 434. Nicht bei Heiting, Dutch Photo Publications. – Erste Ausgabe der ersten selbständigen Veröffentlichung. – „When ‚Sex a gogo‘ was published in 1969, Sanne Sannes had recently been killed in a car accident, at the age of 30. He had been responsible for a notable work in the Dutch ‚beelroman‘ (photonovel) tradition, ‚Oog om Oog‘ (Eye for Eye)“ (Parr/Badger II, 227 zu „Sex a gogo“). – „Sanne Sannes was a graphic artist and painter before he became a photographer. In 1964, five years he had dropped out as a student at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, he took part in a group exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, where he came into conflict with W. Kloet, the keeper of the photographic collection. The conflict is worth mentioning because it illustrates a change in artistic self-consciusness. Kloet had cropped Sanne’s prints slightly to make them fit into the exhibition that he had in mind: a magazine-like montage. This form was inspired by the exhibition ‚Family of Man‘, which had been presented in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1956 and was still very common in the 1960s. The young photographer protested against the mutilation and won his case; the museum paid for new prints. Sannes’ short and successful career was terminated at the age of thirty by a car crash. … The emotional quality of his photographs was hightened by use of dynamic angles, lacking of focus, movement, printing-in and double printing. Sametimes he scratched the negatives or created special effects with drops of water“ (H. Visser, Dutch Eyes S. 488). – Sehr gutes Exemplar.

Bertolotti). [4] Bl. u. 12 Tafeln in Kupfertiefdruck. Orig.-Kart.-Mappe (von Ludwig Kozma).

Heidtmann 11133. Heiting/Jaeger II, 153 ff. Vgl. Koetzle 344 f. – Sehr seltene erste Ausgabe.

– „The great virtue of Fomes nues (Nude Forms) … was that it offered a selection of unconventional images by the great modern photographers from Drtikol and Moholy-Nagy to Raoul Hausmann and André Kertész. The graphic originality and novelty of the cover make an impression straightaway; the two words of the title, „Formes“ and „nues“, are arranged along two diagonal lines, which lend a powerful dynamism to Man Ray’s photograph. In addition, this was the first work to present the male nudes of Platt Lynes. … What is striking about Herbert List’s male nude is the naturalness with which the photographer has captured the power of a black body next to a giant agave plant“ (A. Bertolotti).

He had been responsible for a notable work in the Dutch ‚beelroman‘ (photonovel) tradition, ‚Oog om Oog‘ (Eye for Eye). ‚Sex a gogo‘ was a much more lighthearted, a Pop art sexual manual, complete with psychedelic collaging and cartoon speech balloons, much influenced by the many ‚underground‘ magazines that were such a feature of 1960s culture. The book’s montages were devised by its designer Walter Steevensz, who took over the project when Sannes died, and it it his vision as much as the photographer’s that is evidenced in this typically 1960s comedy of sexual mores. Yet however comical, ‚Sex a gogo‘ never allows us to forget about its erotic intentions“ (Parr/Badger). – „Sanne Sannes was a graphic artist and painter before he became a photographer. Bertolotti 198. – Erste Ausgabe. – Mit eigenhändiger Widmung des Verlegers. – „Although they attempted to imitate Haskin’s style, the many British photography books that inundated the market did not succeed in equaling his powers of suggestion. It was clear that the theme of sexual liberation and the woman’s body was being brought into play, especially if she was young. In „Six Nymphets“ (1966), David Larcher and Philip Olcott Stearns – the first a photo reporter and the second a fashion photographer and former assistant to John Rawlings – attempted to excite the reader by recountin the adventures of saucy girls, but the visual effects were flat and conventional. The word „nymphet“ in the title had come into common use after success of Nabokov’s Lolita as a name for very young, very immodest girls, and was clearly designed to titillate the reader“ (A. Bertolotti). – Schutzumschlag im oberen Rand mit geringf. Läsuren, gutes Exemplar.

Fleckhaus also worked on „Mädchen in meinen Augen“ (Girl in my Eyes; 1975), a photographic collection by the German playboy Gunter Sachs, which highlithed the smooth colors of splendid girls in full bloom against the now canonical background of a black page. In addition, by placing the placing the photographs together like the the photograms of a movie, he revived and perpetuated the trend for using images to tell stories, which would be seen in numerous photography books until the end of the 1970s. The contextualization of erotic images in a story evoking or veiling something mysterious and licentious gave them a superior status“ (A. Auer 451. The Open Book 224 f. – Erste Ausgabe. – „Paine’s 1966 book of photographs, “Mirror of Venus,” is a classic of soft-core erotica and a sexual-revolution period piece. More than seventy-five color and black-and-white prints from that book and its several follow-ups are gathered here for Paine’s first solo exhibition, and they look charmingly innocent by today’s standards. Working with a trio of regular models, the photographer was able to achieve a sense of sweet, playful intimacy and suggest moments of sexual abandon. The work is self-consciously arty and not a little kitsch, but it never asks to be taken seriously, only enjoyed, and that’s easy“ (The New Yorker zu einer Ausstellung in der Chelsea Gallerie, New York im Jan. 2009). – Sehr schönes Exemplar.

1 Booth, Alvin. Corpus. Beyond the body. Introduction by Charlotte Cotton. Zürich, New York, Edition Stemmle (1999). 4°. [59] Bl. mit 85 Tafeln in Sepia. OPbd. mit illustr. OU.

Erste Ausgabe. – Mit eigenhändiger Widmung von A. Booth auf dem Vortitel. – „The warmth and diversity of the tonal range of Booth’s images hint at their relationship with photography of the nineteenth century. The soft, textural beauty of photography – the very quality that defined much early photographic practice – is central to this contemporary work. Photography’s role in intimate social life, which developed through the nineteenth century, is similarly called to mind. The ecstatic slaves of Booth’s images, bound and kneeling, have the sensibility of a Victorian melodrama. The miniature, secretive series of images entitled ‘Small Collectors’ contain the illicit ambience of pornographic daguerreotypes of the 1850s or French postcards of voluptuous femininity from later in the nineteenth century. The colours of these photographs create a nostalgic feel that heightens our sense of past events and sensibilities. These are the peek-a-boo spectacles of the fin de siecle. … These images, with their vocabulary drawn from photography’s history, are made contemporary by the vibrancy of the human forms. The dynamics of the studio performance are ever present in Booth’s photographs. The tactile qualities of skin and motion create the immediacy , the sense of the moment, that resonates through these vibrant photographs“ (C. Cotton). – Sehr gutes Exemplar.

(″Black Males“, Amsterdam 1980). – Text in Deutsch und Englisch. – „At this time, nude black males appeared only in pornographic magazines, photographed by artists who were as yet unknown, such as Craig Anderson and Mike Everest. It was Everest who suggested Mapplethorpe that he should use black rather than gray backgrounds, in order to bring out the luminosity of his models’ black skin more effectively. In ‚Black Males‘, it is the harmony of the compositions and the pensive character of the portraits that give the images their beauty and dignity“ (A. Bertolotti). – Sehr gutes Exemplar.

Auer 227. Bequeret, Paris 154 ff. Bertolotti 74 f. – Kanten geringf. berieben, Vorderdeckel im oberen Rand geringfügig fleckig, sehr schönes Exemplar.

Auer 408. Bertolotti 150 f. Koetzle 67 f. The Open Book 160. Parr/Badger I, 216. Roth, The Book of 101 Books 160 f. – „The best example of the relationship that had now been established between art and eroticisim is Persctive of Nudes (1961) by the English photographer Bill Brandt. In the first part of the work, images of female nudes taken in the 1940s are shown in stifling Victorian interiors; they evoke the language of the cinema of the time, as well as the Surrealist aesthetic. … By contrast, the series of photographs tken in the 1950s for the second part … suggests the contemporary artistic experiments of Jean Arp and Henry Moore. This series revolutionizes the language of photography, and creates something absoletely new“ (A. Bertolotti). – „Mortimer, whose writing here is crisp and clever, notes their formal inspiration in Henry Moore and Jean Arp, and points to Matisse and Picasso for models of voluptuous abstraction. But in the endcomparisons fail to convey Brandt’s utter originality. „Very rarely are we able to free our minds of thoughts and emotions and just see for simple pleasure of seeing,“ he wrote in the introduction to his book ‚Camera in London‘. Brandt knew that freedom, and fully explored it here“ (V. Aletti in Roth). – Sehr gutes sauberes Exemplar.

– „The nudes by the Viennese photographer Otto Schmidt are generally more realistic. Schmidt had started out by photographing typical members of the Viennese population in professional dress or folk costumes as „genres photos“ intended primarily for tourists. Later he began to produce photographs of nudes, no dought because these were more profitable. The elegance of his compositions and the quality of his printing were particularly admired in pictorialist circles. These mannered refined compositions by Schneider and Schmidt set in the midst of virgin nature were still arteficial, imaginary constructions of an illusory world, made by dreams and far from reality. The theorists of the budding naturist movement published them for a while in their magazines, but soon rejected them and replaced them with more natural, spontaneous nudes“ (A. Bertolotti).

Parr/Badger I, 227. – „Rambows „Doris“ […] may be seen as either a misogynist reaction against the Women’s Movement or a blow against sexual repression, a critique of pornographic conventions or an astute piece of commercial pornography masquerading as art – or even as a work of groundbreaking photographic art“ (Parr/Badger). – G. Rambow (geb. – Dazu: Ders. La promenade de König Immerlustik. Frankfurt a. M., Kohlkunstrabenpresse 1968. 4°. Ca. [100] Bl. mit ganz- oder doppelseitigen Abbildungen. Illustr. OKart. – Erste Ausgabe der ersten Fotobuchveröffentlichung. – Sehr gutes Exemplar. – Dazu: Ders. Marienerscheinungen in Kurhessen. Darmstadt, Olympia Press (1969). 8°. [120] S. mit ganz- u. doppels. Abb. OLn. mit illustr. OU. – Heiting/Wiegand 141. – Erste Ausgabe.

– „Eroticism and narrative tension are evident in ‚Das Auge der Liebe‘ (The Eye of Love; 1954), by the Swiss Photographer René Groebli. The subject of the work is love. On the cover, the woman lying on a bed with her body and face pushed into the sheets seems to have the intelligent complexity of a character in an Ingmar Bergman film. Inside the book, once again as in a film, the scenes unfold one by one, telling the story of an amorous encounter; a woman goes upstairs, undresses, makes love, remains alone, then gets dressed again in front of the mirror. Finally she is seen sitting alone in a café, with the rose that her partner has given her“ (A. Bertolotti).

The Virgin Sperm Dancer by William Levy, is a special book issue of ‚Suck‘. … The pornographic photography itself is timeless, that is to say standard and a little boring, but the factor that makes this a classic of 1970s’ counterculture literature and the legacy of 60s’ ‚flower power‘ – where sexual liberation was seen as the beginning of political liberation – is the inspired graphic design of Anthon Beeke. Exuberant, wacky and excessive, Beeke’s design was absolutely of its time, the kind of psychedelically inspired praphics seen right across pop and youth culture during this period“ (Parr/Badger). – „Joop the hero, becomes Joopie, going from male to female before returning to his original state. Experimenting with the most diverse erotic adventures, all shown in minute detail, he/she discovers that complete sexual satisfaction can only be achieved by fully recognizing the sexual ambivalence that is present in every individual. … ‚The Virgin Sperm Dancer‘ is set in places that belong to the hippie tradition: the city’s Vondel Parc, or the Fantasio and the Paradiso, cultural centers subsidized by the government“ (A. In Man and Woman, the symbolic representation of the relationship between Adam and Eve was still conditioned by traditional thinking; to be convinced of this one need only think of the image of the man offering the apple to the women, a fairly naive lterary attempt to reverse the myth. In Embrace, however, the photographer treats the subject with an incomparably suberior freedom of expression. The figure of the male body next to that of the female no longer needs an explanation; it is a reality. The images of intertwined bodies, or of the woman’s buttocks pressed against the man’s muscular, threatening arms, represents the essence of life. All these images in no apparent order only take on a meaning if they are put together, one after the other; in isolation they lose their function. This is why the photography book is so important to the artist; arranged in a book, the photographs give the sense of a completed idea, a finished project, whereas shown separately and in isolation – for instance, in an exhibition – they lose their meaning“ (A. Bertolotti). – „Despite its intensely Japanese qualities, the style, dramatic and retorical, focuses on the human body in a way amien to the Japanese, where there was no tradition of the nude in an abstact sense, only nakedness“ (Parr/Badger I, 279 zu Otoko to Onna).

Ammann in Koetzle).

– Sehr gutes sauberes Exemplar.

1 Paine, Wingate. Spiegel der Venus. Texte von Françoise Sagan und Federico Fellini. (Autorisierte Übersetzung). Luzern, Frankfurt/M., Bucher (1966). 4°. [80] Bl. mit 108 teils farb. Tafeln. OHldr. mit goldgepr. Rücken- u. Deckeltitel u. illustr. OU. in Orig.-Pappschuber.

Heidtmann 11323. Vgl. Auer 451. The Open Book 224 f. (Beide amerik. Orig.-Ausgabe aus demselben Jahr). – Erste deutsche Ausgabe.
