Koetzle), war Kriegskorrespondentin im Zweiten Weltkrieg. – Miller ging nach ihrer Trennung von dem Ägypter Aziz Eloui Bey 1939 mit dem Maler und Kunstsammler Roland Penrose nach England. Durch die Bekanntschaft mit der Chefredakteurin Audrey Withers wurde sie 1940 Vertragsfotografin bei der britischen Vogue. Angeregt von dem Life-Fotografen David Scherman arbeitete sie seit 1942 als Kriegskorrespondentin für Vogue. Bekannt wurden besonders ihre Bilder von der Befreiung des KZ Dachau, am selben Tag entstand auch das bekannte Bild von Lee in Hitlers Badewanne (aufgenommen von D. Scherman), in dessen Wohnung am Münchner Prinzregentenplatz. – „Der Name Lee Millers, sofern er heute noch bekannt ist, wird in erster Linie mit einer ihrer drei verschiedenen Lebensrollen in Verbindung gebracht. Man erinnert sich an sie entweder als eine der großen Schönheiten der europäisch-amerikanischen Kunst- und Gesellschaftsszene der 20er und 30er Jahre, als Modell, Geliebte und fotografische Mitstreiterin Man Rays oder schließlich als Lady Penrose, die illustre Gattin von Sir Roland. Through her acquaintance with editor-in-chief Audrey Withers, she became a contract photographer for British Vogue in 1940. Inspired by the Life photographer David Scherman, she worked as a war correspondent for Vogue from 1942. Her pictures of the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp became particularly well known, and on the same day she took the famous picture of Lee in Hitler’s bathtub (taken by D. Scherman) in his flat on Munich’s Prinzregentenplatz. – ‘Lee Miller’s name, if it is still known today, is primarily associated with one of her three different roles in life. She is remembered either as one of the great beauties of the European-American art and society scene of the 1920s and 1930s, as a model, lover and photographic companion of Man Ray, or finally as Lady Penrose, the illustrious wife of Sir Roland. She was all of these things. But perhaps more importantly for her and for us, she was also an artist herself. And it is no exaggeration to describe Lee Miller as one of the most outstanding and accomplished photographers of her generation’ (J.
