Die reich illustrierte Ausgabe, des wohl erfolgreichsten Kräuterbuchs des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts, enthält neben zahlr. Abbildungen von Pflanzen auch Bilder von Krustentieren, Weichtieren, Fischen, Amphibien, Insekten, Spinnen, Vögeln, Säugetieren, Reptilien u.a.; daneben Darstellungen zur Butterbereitung, Imkerei, Schlangenfang und eines tollwütigen Hundes sowie am Schluss von Destillationsapparaturen. – „In this commentary on Dioscorides, Mattioli prepared what many authorities now regard as the encyclopedia of Renaissance pharmacology. He studied hundreds of plants, examined and described them fully, added many new species, and provided excellent illustrations which were far superior to those of any previous work in the field“ (Heirs of Hippocrates). – Einband etwas berieben, Frontispiz mit kl. Randausriss, durchgehend im oberen und unteren Blattrand mit Feuchtigkeitsspuren und etwas gebräunt, gutes vollständiges Exemplar in einem dekorativen zeitgenössischen Einband. – Second last French edition of the herbal book first published in 1544. This richly illustrated edition, probably the most successful herbal of the 16th and 17th centuries, contains numerous illustrations of plants as well as pictures of crustaceans, molluscs, fish, amphibians, insects, spiders, birds, mammals, reptiles, etc.; also illustrations of butter making, beekeeping, snake catching and a rabid dog as well as distillation apparatus at the end. – „In this commentary on Dioscorides, Mattioli prepared what many authorities now regard as the encyclopedia of Renaissance pharmacology.
