Rona signiert. – „Born into a Hungarian Jewish family, photographer and photojournalist Jutka Rona spent most of her life in Amsterdam, where her family moved in 1936 to escape persecutagion by the Hungarian regime. She was the daughter of the photojournalist Imre Rona, who founded the ABC Press photo agency, which represented wellknown photographers, including Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson. She ran the agency from her father’s death in 1974 until it disbanded in 2003. Over her long career, she made portraits, street photographs, travel reports, stills for Dutch feature films and theater photographs. ‚Wolvenstraat 1974. Tussen 12 en 2 / between 12 and 2‘, a sociological study of a street in Amsterdam, is her first photobook. In her conceptual approach to bookmaking, Rona photographed from two pespectives the same street in Amsterdam’s Negen Straatjes neighborhood every day of a year at a fixed time, between 12pm and 2pm. The layout of each page roughly resemples a calender with thirty squares, each containig a black-and-white image or text. It begins at the upper left corner with paired images for each day consecutively going down the first two columns, starting again at the top of the following column. … While the street scene changes through the movement of people and vehicles, the buildings remain static and anchor the images. This repetion of architecture gives the book’s flow a time-lapse quality, with people bundled in coats and hats in photographs from the winter months and sheeding their outer layers of clothing to wear light dresses and shorts in the summer images“ (K.
