First and only edition. – The photos show: Public Park, passenger landing pier at Marracuene near Lourenço Marques, Port Melville, Inyack Island, Marracuene near Lourenço Marques, On the Umbeluzi River, Fishing village at Inyack Island, Moodie’s Creek near Barberton, Transvaal, Native Village Huts at Umbeluzi near Lourenço Marques and others. – The territory featured in these works is the former district and colonial capital of Lourenço Marques in Portuguese East Africa, which was renamed Maputo after Mozambique’s independence in 1975. Geographically, the territory is situated on the northern bank of the Espírito Santo Estuary at Delagoa Bay (Indian Ocean). The historical district and city historically spanned the immediate coastal region, acting as a major port and railway terminus connecting the hinterlands of South Africa (Transvaal) and Swaziland to the sea. – The two photographers, Demetrios Spanos and Panagiotis Tsitsias, were Greek immigrants who ran a well-known photography studio, a postcard publishing company, and a general store in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo). For their famous albums, they traveled throughout the region, documenting the architecture of the colonial city, everyday life, and the traditions of the local population. In addition to bound photo albums, they produced hundreds of numbered postcards (Postais de Moçambique), which today are valuable historical documents for research and popular collector’s items. They were part of a small group of early European professional photographers in Mozambique – much like the better-known Lazarus brothers, with whom they shaped the market for colonial photography around the turn of the century. – In very good condition.

Gochmann in Deutsch und Englisch. – „Fred Herzog (*1930 in Bad Friedrichshall) widmete sich nach seiner Emigration nach Kanada in den 1950er-Jahren einem damals eher unüblichen Medium: der Farbfotografie. Er durchbrach damit die etablierten Sehgewohnheiten und Lehrmeinungen, die vorrangig der Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie den Kunststatus zusprachen. Als Pionier der Farbfotografie perfektioniert er den Blick für das vermeintlich Nebensächliche. Seine Motive sind die Straßen von Vancouver, Supermärkte, Tankstellen, Bars, Stadtszenen, Landschaften und immer wieder die Menschen seiner Umgebung – die Höhen und Tiefen des nordamerikanischen Traums. Er lotet das Potenzial der Farbfotografie als Medium großer Objektivität wie auch großer Kunstfertigkeit aus und zeigt mit kritischem Blick Banales, Ephemeres und scheinbar Bedeutungsloses. Vor allem aber verleiht die Farbe seinen Fotografien eine einzigartige Stimmung und Kraft und lässt sie erst authentisch erscheinen“ (Hatje Cantz). – Sehr gutes Exemplar.

Gochmann in German and English. – „After emigrating to Canada in the 1950s, Fred Herzog (born in Bad Friedrichshall in 1930) devoted himself to a medium that was rather unusual at the time: colour photography. In doing so, he broke with established viewing habits and doctrines, which primarily attributed artistic status to black-and-white photography. As a pioneer of colour photography, he perfected his eye for the supposedly incidental. His motifs are the streets of Vancouver, supermarkets, petrol stations, bars, city scenes, landscapes and, time and again, the people around him – the highs and lows of the North American dream. He explores the potential of colour photography as a medium of great objectivity and great artistry, and with a critical eye shows the banal, the ephemeral and the seemingly meaningless. Above all, however, colour gives his photographs a unique mood and power, making them appear authentic“ (Hatje Cantz). – Very good copy.
